Public dispute between police union leader and drug enforcement commander
Nikos Loizidis, a representative of the police union 'ISOTITA', engaged in a televised confrontation with Christos Andreou, the Commander of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN). The dispute was triggered by a message from Andreou claiming that senior officers work continuously without overtime pay, while suggesting that front-line officers receive higher compensation. Loizidis strongly disputed these claims, questioning the workload of senior officers who hold high-ranking positions with a 4,000-euro salary. He argued that high-ranking officials at the A12 salary scale are eligible for overtime but fail to claim it due to concerns regarding career advancement. Loizidis further alleged that police leadership prioritizes public relations and high-profile drug seizures over the actual welfare and working conditions of rank-and-file officers. He challenged Andreou to discuss these working conditions directly with the officers under his command. The conflict highlights an ongoing tension regarding the division of labor, compensation, and management priorities within the Cyprus Police force.
