EDEK announces extraordinary party conference for July 5
The Political Bureau of the EDEK party in Cyprus has officially decided to convene an extraordinary Pancyprian conference on July 5, 2026. This decision follows a proposal by party leader Nikos Anastasiou, superseding the previously scheduled Central Committee meeting set for June 28, 2026. The move comes in the wake of the party failing to secure parliamentary seats in the May elections, where it received 3.3% of the national vote. Invoking Article 31, Paragraph 2 of the party statutes, Anastasiou stated that the goal is to allow members to express their views democratically and to redesign the party's future operations. The conference agenda focuses on four core issues: implementing the June 7, 2026, Central Committee decision regarding party statutory and political congresses, verifying the member registry based on a July 23, 2025, decision, conducting a financial audit, and managing the reduction in state funding alongside staff reorganization. This initiative aims to address the party's current political and societal challenges.
