Death toll from Venezuela earthquake exceeds 5,300
A series of two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northern Venezuela on June 24, with only 39 seconds between the tremors. The latest official report from Parliament President Jorge Rodriguez confirms 5,346 fatalities, with the number of injured remaining at 16,740. The coastal state of La Guaira near Caracas suffered the most significant destruction, with 190 buildings collapsing and 856 sustaining damage. Over 23,100 people are currently living in more than 100 temporary shelters, some lacking basic infrastructure. While official counts do not provide an estimate for missing persons, UN assessments shortly after the event suggested the figure could be as high as 50,000, while other estimates range near 10,000. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has initiated housing distribution, promising 4,000 new units for displaced families within the year, though government estimates suggest 25,000 properties are needed for total reconstruction. Furthermore, Venezuela has reportedly secured $346 million in funding from the IMF to assist with recovery efforts.
