Parliamentary committee on education holds first session to discuss teacher appointment system
The Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on Education held its first session under its new composition to organize its future agenda and roadmap. A key priority is the reform of the teacher appointment system, which is set to expire on August 31, 2027. Committee members have expressed concerns regarding delays, with AKEL MP Christos Christofides warning that the party may introduce its own legislative proposals if the Ministry of Education fails to submit its proposal by September. DISY MP Prodromos Alabritis also noted that the ministry's position has been pending since November 2024. Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou is scheduled to attend the next session on July 8 to brief the committee on this and other outstanding issues. Additionally, the committee will discuss the new special education bill and received notice regarding a future appearance by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, to address grievances from the arts sector. Committee President Chrysanthos Savvides stated that procedural matters and pending legislative proposals are currently being distributed to all members.
