Parliamentary Education Committee and Ministry address teacher appointment system reforms
The Cyprus Parliamentary Education Committee, under new leadership and composition, has prioritized the reform of the teacher appointment system, which must be finalized before the current list of appointees is abolished on August 31, 2027. Minister of Education Athena Michaelidou announced that the ministry intends to submit a comprehensive proposal to Parliament by October. Consultations are currently underway with education unions, and the minister is scheduled to brief the Parliamentary Committee on July 8. Proposed changes include making teacher appointment examinations autonomous to prevent year-to-year score comparisons. While the minister aims to balance the rights of current contract teachers with necessary reforms, opposition members like Christos Christofidis of AKEL have threatened to introduce their own legislative proposals if the ministry's draft is not presented by September. Other political figures, including Prodromos Alabritis of DISY, have emphasized the urgency, noting that requests for the ministry's position have been pending since 2024.
