First robotic telesurgery performed in Greece by a doctor based in China

Professor Evangelos Liatsikos, Director of the Urology Clinic at the University Hospital of Patras, performed the first robotic radical prostatectomy in Greece while physically located in Wuhan, China. The procedure involved a patient in Athens, with the distance between the doctor and the patient covering approximately 8,000 kilometers. The operation was facilitated by advanced robotic systems and high-speed fiber-optic network connections routed through Frankfurt. Liatsikos emphasized the lack of latency, noting that the connection functioned as if he were present in the same room. A backup medical team remained on-site in Athens to manage any potential emergencies. The doctor identified this achievement as a significant milestone in telemedicine, enabling remote surgical interventions and training. Following this procedure, Liatsikos scheduled another remote operation from Patras for a patient in Athens. This development marks a transition from theoretical technology to practical medical application supported by modern infrastructure.
