Debate over the future of Limassol Zoo
Limassol Zoo, which has operated in the city's Public Garden since 1956, is currently the subject of a polarized public debate regarding its future. In a vote last week, the Limassol Municipal Council rejected a proposal for the zoo's closure by a margin of 14 to 10. A public consultation commissioned by the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CYCERE) revealed that 56.89% of all respondents supported closure, while Limassol residents were nearly evenly divided, with 50.21% favoring an upgrade over closure. The political party ALMA has publicly called for the permanent closure of the facility, suggesting the site be repurposed into a Biodiversity Park, arguing that keeping wild animals in captivity in an urban center is outdated. Conversely, the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare advocates for upgrading the existing facility to meet modern European standards for biodiversity protection and animal welfare. Mayor Yiannis Armeftis emphasized the zoo's historic value to the community, noting that discussions will continue to find a consensus. The zoo underwent significant modernization in 2012, but has faced recurring criticism and protests since a 2022 incident involving the death of a deer.
