Nicosia municipalities plan real-time flood warning system for Pedieos river

The municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, and Lakatamia are developing a real-time flood warning system for the Pedieos river. This initiative is part of an urban linear park regeneration project designed to mitigate risks to life and property during heavy rainfall. The system utilizes sensors to monitor water levels, flow rates, and rainfall, integrating this data with meteorological forecasts and hydrological models. Automatic SMS and email alerts will be dispatched to municipal authorities and park users when defined safety thresholds are exceeded. A public, colour-coded risk map will provide transparent, real-time information regarding flood danger levels. Flood probability assessments will cover windows of up to 24 hours in advance. Critical flood-prone areas include the Alexandroupoleos Street bridge in Strovolos and various points within Lakatamia. A dedicated municipal control centre will manage the platform, with selected data shared publicly to enhance preventive awareness.
