Cyprus proposes digital tracking and microchipping for stray cats
On Thursday, the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment in Cyprus announced a plan to implement microchipping for stray cats neutered through the national sterilization program. The proposal also includes the creation of a digital platform to track management efforts for stray animals. These measures were discussed at a coordination meeting held on Tuesday, convened by Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare Antonia Theodosiou. The meeting followed an initiative by the Federation 'Voice for Animals of Cyprus' (CVA) and included representatives from Veterinary Services, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, and the Animal Police. Participants reviewed current sterilization efforts, which result in approximately 2,200 neutered cats annually via the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method. The discussions highlighted the significant role of volunteers and animal welfare organizations in the capture, transport, and care of these animals. Authorities and welfare organizations expressed broad support for the integration of digital tracking technologies to improve policy implementation. There is a recognized need for increased collaboration among stakeholders to address the logistical challenges faced by volunteers.
