Police warn of phishing emails targeting personal data
The Cyprus Police have issued a warning regarding fraudulent emails masquerading as official institutions, including banks and the Tax Department. In a recent incident reported to the Nicosia CID, a citizen received an email falsely claiming to be from the Tax Department regarding a tax refund. The email contained a link leading to a counterfeit website designed to harvest personal information. The individual recognized the scam and reported it to the police before disclosing any sensitive details. The Financial Crime Investigation Unit of the Nicosia CID is currently investigating this specific case. Authorities urge the public not to share personal or banking data via email or unauthorized websites. Citizens are advised to verify the identity of senders through official support channels and to delete any suspicious messages immediately without clicking on embedded links.
