Cyprus to introduce AI-powered cameras to combat distracted driving
Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades has announced a new initiative to improve road safety in Cyprus by deploying AI-powered cameras. These cameras are designed specifically to detect drivers using mobile phones, a behavior identified by police as a leading cause of fatal road accidents. The technology will initially undergo a pilot phase before full implementation. Additionally, the government plans to relocate mobile camera units from highways to urban areas, where the majority of serious accidents occur. On highways, authorities are considering a new system that calculates the average speed of vehicles using cameras at the start and end of routes. Minister Vafeades emphasized that these measures are essential to stop dangerous behaviors, including browsing social media like TikTok while driving. He also clarified that police patrols on highways will continue to operate alongside these new technological systems. The initiative comes amid broader concerns about road safety and the high number of outstanding traffic fines.
