French authorities implement restrictions as heatwave impacts public health

France is experiencing a severe heatwave that is placing significant strain on the national healthcare system. Paris police chief Patrice Faure has banned the public consumption of alcohol from Friday at 12:00 until Saturday morning, with similar restrictions repeating through the weekend. Retail alcohol sales are also prohibited at night, excluding licensed bars and restaurants. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu raised the national health emergency plan to the highest alert level to facilitate staffing in hospitals. Health Minister Stephanie Rist reported that cardiac arrests in Paris have quadrupled over a 24-hour period. Authorities confirmed the deaths of several individuals, including a three-year-old child found in a car in Paris and five to six others in Rennes suspected to be heat-related. Two other children previously died under similar conditions in southern France. Officials emphasized that the extreme temperatures pose a serious risk to both the elderly and the younger population.
