Larnaca Salt Lake turns pink due to seasonal biological cycle
The Alyki Salt Lake in Larnaca, Cyprus, has recently shifted to a pink and reddish hue, attracting many visitors. Experts confirm this is a recurring, predictable seasonal phenomenon rather than a mystical event. The color change is caused by the mass reproduction of the microscopic crustacean known as Artemia salina. This organism thrives when salt concentrations and water temperatures reach specific peak levels. The crustacean serves as a primary food source for pink flamingos that winter in the region. The lake is an officially recognized protected wetland under the European Natura network. High temperatures and increased salinity levels currently accelerate this biological process, creating the observed visual effect.
