Swedish environment minister brings infant to EU meeting

On Thursday, Swedish Minister for the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari attended an EU ministerial meeting in Luxembourg accompanied by her three-month-old son, Adam. At 30 years old, Pourmokhtari, who became Sweden's youngest minister in 2022, stated that her presence with the infant aimed to support policies that allow parents to balance family and professional life. She emphasized that individuals should not have to choose between being an active minister and a present parent. EU officials noted that this may be the first time an infant has been brought into such a ministerial meeting. During the event, French representative Monique Barbut presented the minister with a baby outfit. The act drew attention to the broader societal challenges mothers face in the workforce, including potential impacts on career progression and earnings. Pourmokhtari highlighted that the ability to combine work and childcare is a positive aspect of life in Europe.
