Fatal car accident in Newark kills two women
On Saturday, two women, 58-year-old Mariana Elizabeth Valverde Beltran and 61-year-old Maria Isabel DeLos Angeles Salgado Ayala, were struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street in Newark, New Jersey. The incident occurred as the women were returning from a home where they had watched a World Cup match. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle, driven by 26-year-old David J. Zapata-Vera, hitting the pedestrians. An eyewitness reported that the driver accelerated as the traffic signal was turning red, although it remains unconfirmed if he was intoxicated. Zapata-Vera, a resident of Newark, turned himself in to the police on Tuesday, three days after the accident. He is currently being held without bond. The suspect faces charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.
