Father charged after two children die in vehicle in Xylofagou
A 30-year-old Bulgarian father has been charged with two counts of causing death by reckless and careless act after his two sons, aged 8 and 10, were found dead in a car in Xylofagou on Sunday. The Dhekelia Court ordered the father to remain in custody until the trial begins on July 16. CCTV footage shows the children playing in the yard and entering the car, which belonged to the father's 38-year-old partner, through an unlocked rear door. Expert investigations revealed a fault in the door lock, and the vehicle's child safety lock prevented them from exiting. The father’s partner, initially arrested, was released unconditionally as she was not the legal guardian. The prosecution alleged that the father did not return home when he should have, potentially preventing the tragedy, though his defense attorney contested these claims. The children's bodies will be repatriated to Bulgaria for burial, with the state covering transportation costs.
