Investigation into the deaths of two children found in a car in Xylofagou
On Sunday, June 28, two children aged 8 and 10 were found deceased inside a locked, parked car in the village of Xylofagou, which falls under the jurisdiction of the British Sovereign Base Areas of Dhekelia. Emergency services and British Bases police arrived at the scene, where they confirmed the children were already dead. Preliminary reports indicate the children may have died from asphyxiation, and some sources noted signs of rigor mortis and potential sunburn-related skin marks. The family, reportedly of Bulgarian origin, left the children unattended in the vehicle. The British Bases police have cordoned off the area and are conducting a thorough investigation, including collecting statements and waiting for autopsy results to determine the precise cause of death. This incident is distinct from a separate ongoing investigation in Limassol regarding the death of a 12-month-old infant currently being probed as an unnatural death.
