Investigation launched following death of one-year-old infant in Limassol

A 12-month-old infant died at Limassol General Hospital on the night of Thursday, June 25, 2020. The child was brought to the emergency department in an unconscious state by his father at approximately 10:30 PM. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts and intubation by medical staff, the infant could not be revived and was pronounced dead an hour later. The baby had reportedly been suffering from a fever and malaise since June 23 and had been diagnosed with gastroenteritis by a pediatrician on June 24. Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the sudden death. An external examination conducted by the police found no signs of external injuries on the body. Forensic pathologist Nikolas Charalambous was scheduled to perform an autopsy on Saturday, June 27, to determine the exact cause of death. Some reports indicate that the child was just two days shy of his first birthday.
