Two children die trapped in a car in Xylofagou
On Sunday, June 28, two Bulgarian brothers, aged 8 and 10, were found dead inside a vehicle in the village of Xylofagou, Cyprus, located within the Dhekelia British Sovereign Base Areas. The children were visiting their father and his 38-year-old partner for the holidays. The father and his partner departed for work before 7:00 AM, leaving the minors unattended at home. The stepmother reportedly discovered the children in the car around 2:30 PM, after which emergency services were called, though the boys were pronounced dead. While some accounts suggest the vehicle was unlocked and the children accidentally trapped themselves, authorities are investigating potential malfunctions with the car’s locking mechanism. Surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed to reconstruct the events. The apartment complex landlord stated he had previously requested that the family not keep children on the premises due to safety concerns. On Monday, June 29, the father and his partner appeared before a court in the British Bases and remain under investigation for potential negligence.
