Two children die trapped in a parked car in Xylophagou
On Sunday, June 28, 2026, two brothers aged 8 and 10 were found unresponsive inside a parked vehicle outside their home in Xylophagou, a village within the British Sovereign Base Areas of Cyprus. The children, who were visiting from Bulgaria for summer holidays, were discovered by their stepmother after she returned from work. Despite efforts by neighbors and relatives to break the windows and assist, the boys were pronounced dead. British Base police arrested the father and the stepmother on suspicion of negligence. Preliminary findings suggest the children were playing in the yard, entered the locked vehicle, and became trapped, suffering from heat-related injuries during the long exposure to the sun. Authorities have cordoned off the area to conduct forensic investigations and autopsies to confirm the exact cause of death. The suspects were scheduled to appear before the British Bases Court on Monday, June 29, 2026, for a detention hearing.
