EU energy ministers discuss electricity grids package under Cypriot presidency
On Friday, the Cypriot Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou, presided over the final meeting of EU energy ministers during the Cypriot presidency. The primary agenda item was the 'grids package,' aimed at expanding, reinforcing, and modernizing European energy networks to improve market competitiveness and resilience. Minister Damianou emphasized the importance of reaching a general approach on this legislative package. The council also reviewed energy supply security in preparation for the upcoming summer and winter seasons. Discussions included an assessment of recent regional crises, specifically the developments in the Strait of Hormuz. Despite these tensions, the Minister expressed confidence in the security of energy supplies for the summer. The session focused on lessons learned from past supply disruptions and the collective readiness of the European Union member states.
