European commission proposes extension of protection status for Ukrainian refugees until March 2028
The European Commission has proposed extending the special protection status for Ukrainian refugees residing in EU countries until March 2028. This status, which provides rights to residency, employment, and social benefits, currently covers between 4.4 and 4.5 million individuals. The majority of these refugees are located in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic. European Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner stated that support must continue as long as the war persists. At the request of Kyiv, the new proposal excludes men of conscription age from acquiring this status for the first time. The protection mechanism was first implemented in March 2022 and this marks the fifth time the Commission has sought an extension. While the measure aims to ensure continued support, some EU member states are reportedly expressing fatigue regarding the protracted conflict. Discussions have also begun regarding long-term residency options and potential eventual returns to Ukraine.
