Exhibition at Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre triggers protests

The exhibition 'A Slight Indisposition', hosted at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) in collaboration with the Pierides Foundation, faced significant political and public criticism upon its opening. The controversy centers on the participation of Turkish Cypriot artist Emin Cizenel, who is identified by critics as the creator of the flag used by the breakaway state in the north. The Ecologists movement formally objected to the inclusion of the artist, arguing that his involvement ignores the political dimensions of the island's partition. Outside the venue, protesters displayed banners calling for an end to what they labeled 'art washing' and the normalization of the occupation. During the event, journalist Giorgos Tattis reported being harassed and having his phone thrown to the ground by an associate of the curator, Esra Plumer Bardak, while he attempted to ask questions regarding the curatorial selection process. The exhibition features works from 16 artists, but the event has become a flashpoint for debate over the role of historical memory in cultural initiatives.
