Political reaction to artist's participation in Nicosia art exhibition
The Green Party-Citizens' Cooperation has expressed formal dissatisfaction regarding the participation of Turkish Cypriot artist Emin Çizenel in the 'A slight indisposition' exhibition. The event is scheduled to open at the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) in collaboration with the Pierides Foundation. The party’s objection stems from the artist's historical role in designing the flag associated with the TRNC, which they describe as a symbol of occupation and division. The Green Party argues that while art should be a space for free expression, organizers must be sensitive to the political implications of their choices. They highlighted that this is not the first time Çizenel has exhibited in the southern part of Cyprus, questioning the repeated invitations extended by local organizers. The movement asserts that such decisions require public dialogue and should not overlook historical sensitivities regarding the ongoing division of the island. No response from the exhibition organizers or the artist has been mentioned in the reports.
