Drones to monitor traffic on Cyprus highways
The Cyprus Public Works Department has announced that unmanned aerial vehicles will be used to collect traffic data between June 29 and July 9, 2026. Flights are scheduled daily from 09:30 to 17:00. Operations will cover sections of the Nicosia-Limassol motorway between the Alambra and Kornos exits, the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway from Lymbia to the Rizoelia junction, and the Larnaca-Ayia Napa route from the Rizoelia junction to the Xylofagou exit. Drones will fly parallel to the highways over the embankments, remaining outside of active traffic lanes. The districts of Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta will be affected by these flights. The Department confirmed that all collected data will be processed in full compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 2016/679 to protect individual privacy.
