Public discussion on parental awareness regarding drug addiction
A public discussion titled "Parental Awareness – Empowering Children" was held at Skali Aglantzias to mark the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is observed on June 26. The event featured three graduates from the Agia Skepi residential therapeutic community, who shared their personal experiences with overcoming addictions to heroin and cocaine. One of the participants, Stelios, born in 1980, recounted his history of substance abuse, which began with alcohol and tobacco at age 13 following his father's death in 1985. The panel included Tina Pavlou, the clinical director and program supervisor of Agia Skepi. The session aimed to help parents recognize the early signs of addiction, which often go unnoticed even when behavioral changes occur. Stelios noted that his mother was initially unaware of his drug use despite clear physical indicators during his adolescence. The event highlighted the necessity of early intervention and the role of specialized rehabilitation programs in recovery. The testimonies emphasized the long-term struggle required to transition back into a functional life.
