Sheep and goat farmers request emergency financial aid due to foot-and-mouth disease restrictions
The Union of Goat and Sheep Producer Groups has submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment for emergency financial support. The producers state that restrictions implemented to control the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, including movement bans and delayed sales of lambs and kids, have created an unbearable financial burden. They are specifically requesting subsidies to cover increased feed costs and compensation for unsold livestock remaining on farms. The Ministry of Agriculture has confirmed receipt of the request and stated that it will be evaluated based on the current legal framework. The government highlighted that it has already provided significant support, including nearly 50% of a €30 million investment program directed at the sector and previously approved compensation for affected farmers. While some initial measures to ease restrictions have been discussed, grazing bans remain a point of contention between stakeholders. The Ministry emphasized that its priority is to ensure the protection of livestock while supporting the primary sector effectively.
