Escalation in hostilities between the US and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz
Recent military clashes have erupted between US and Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz, breaking a memorandum of understanding signed the previous week. The conflict began Thursday when four drones were launched against commercial shipping, hitting one vessel according to US reports. In retaliation, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted airstrikes targeting Iranian missile warehouses, drone facilities, and coastal radar installations. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed these US strikes violated the memorandum and launched counter-attacks against American positions in the Gulf. Additionally, the IRGC reported repelling a US attack in the Sirik region, though they provided few operational details. Tehran and Washington are currently accusing each other of violating the ceasefire terms. Both sides have issued threats of further, more powerful responses. The diplomatic negotiations regarding Tehran's nuclear program, which had recently commenced, are now significantly jeopardized by these developments.
