Greece announces 350 million euro investment in space technology

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced a 350 million euro investment plan to bolster the national space sector over the next four years. The funding is sourced from the Recovery and Resilience Facility. During the 'Greece in Orbit' event, held alongside space mission physician Adrianos Golemis, the Prime Minister highlighted the development of a domestic space ecosystem and existing satellite capabilities. The government intends to utilize space technologies for environmental monitoring, specifically for detecting wildfires and natural disasters. Additionally, the plan includes satellite surveillance of crops to integrate with the land registry for more accurate agricultural subsidy distribution. The initiatives also focus on maritime surveillance to support island territories and national defense, although specific dual-use applications remain confidential. These measures are designed to provide direct benefits to citizens and create export opportunities for local technology companies.
