Investigation into the Focus Maritime case and allegations against Nicos Anastasiades

The Anti-Corruption Authority of Cyprus has issued a report suggesting that former President Nicos Anastasiades may have interfered with the work of former Attorney General Costas Clerides regarding the Focus Maritime case. The investigation, which began in April 2014 following reports by the newspaper Politis, examined claims that the company funded the DISY and AKEL parties with approximately 2 million euros linked to the 2008 presidential elections. The Authority's current report suggests that Anastasiades contacted Clerides to express dissatisfaction with the probe and requested an end to the inquiries, actions that inspectors suggest could constitute an abuse of power. However, discrepancies have emerged, as Costas Clerides publicly stated in a television interview on October 10, 2016, that no such intervention by anyone had occurred. This statement, recorded on video, contradicts the findings currently presented by the Anti-Corruption Authority. The initial investigation was led by Clerides and current Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis, with official updates in 2015 indicating that the case was nearing conclusion and that evidence of criminal offenses was not apparent. The situation remains a subject of intense scrutiny due to the conflicting accounts between the 2016 public testimony and the current investigative findings.
