Akel party evaluates 2026 election results and initiates 2028 presidential strategy
During a meeting of the Central Committee, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou announced that the party views its performance in the May 2026 parliamentary elections as a success. The party increased its vote share to 24%, up from 22.3% in the 2021 elections, gaining an additional 9,000 votes while maintaining its 15 parliamentary seats. Stefanou highlighted that the party achieved the highest voter mobilization compared to other parties, showing improved appeal among younger voters and first-time participants. Despite these gains, the party leadership stated they will not become complacent, citing public challenges such as high living costs, housing crises, and social insecurity. The party is now shifting its focus toward strategic preparations for the 2028 presidential elections. The declared objective remains achieving a progressive change in the governance of the country. Furthermore, the leadership emphasized that the party intends to continue advocating for social issues amidst ongoing economic difficulties. The discussion also addressed the need for continued engagement regarding the Cyprus issue in light of current political mobility.
