AKEL evaluates results of May 2026 legislative elections
The Central Committee of AKEL met on June 27, 2026, in Nicosia to evaluate the results of the legislative elections held on May 24, 2026. General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou characterized the outcome as a significant political success for the Left, noting that the party achieved its target by increasing its vote share from 22.3% in 2021 to 24%. The party added approximately 9,000 votes while maintaining its 15 seats in the parliament. Stefanou highlighted that AKEL recorded the highest voter mobilization rate among all parties, exceeding 80%, and observed an increase in support among voters under 30 and first-time voters. The leadership reaffirmed its commitment to challenging institutional corruption and addressing social issues such as the cost of living and housing crisis. Moving forward, the party plans to engage in a grassroots dialogue process with members and the 'Social Alliance' throughout the autumn to prepare for the 2028 presidential elections. Additionally, the party declared its intent to continue opposing the political role of ELAM.
