AKEL evaluates the 2026 parliamentary election results
On June 27, 2026, AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou addressed the party's Central Committee in Nicosia to evaluate the results of the parliamentary elections held on May 24, 2026. Stefanou described the outcome as a significant political success for the Left, noting an increase in the party's electoral strength from 22.3% in 2021 to 24% in 2026. The party gained approximately 9,000 additional votes while maintaining its 15 parliamentary seats. Stefanou highlighted that AKEL achieved the highest voter loyalty rate among all parties, exceeding 80%, and observed a growing trend of support among voters under 30. During the address, he committed the party to continue fighting against corruption and institutional rot, while criticizing the role of ELAM. Furthermore, the Secretary General emphasized the party's dedication to its established policy regarding the Cyprus problem and vowed to continue addressing social issues such as the cost of living and housing. Despite the success, Stefanou cautioned against complacency, urging the party to remain active in advocating for popular interests.
