Australian national arrested in Thailand over death of 17-year-old girl
A 45-year-old Australian man, identified as Seymour Peter Karman, was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok on Friday night while attempting to leave the country. Police detained the suspect after the body of a 17-year-old girl was discovered in a suitcase near railway tracks in Pattaya on Saturday. Security footage reportedly shows the suspect entering a residence in Pattaya with the victim early Thursday morning and leaving later that night carrying a large black suitcase on a motorcycle. The victim, who had left her home in Kalasin province on June 16, was found with visible injuries. Authorities have charged or are preparing to charge the suspect with premeditated murder, abduction of a minor, and concealment of a corpse, with some reports mentioning potential sexual exploitation charges. The suspect, whose age is variously reported as 45 or 46 in different media, initially denied the allegations but later expressed regret to the victim's family, claiming the event was outside his control. He faces potential penalties ranging from life imprisonment to the death penalty. The victim's family has traveled to Bangkok to collect her remains.
