Restoration of historic mosque and school completed in Agios Thomas

The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage has finalized conservation works on the mosque and an adjacent school building in the village of Agios Thomas in the Limassol district. This project is part of a broader initiative titled 'Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus', funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The mosque, documented in records since the early 19th century, is situated at a high point in the village and was constructed using traditional local stone. The adjacent school building features a 'makrinari' architectural layout, reflecting the same historical construction style. Restoration efforts focused on structural stabilization, cleaning, and general repairs to preserve the original character of both sites. Sotos Ktoris, co-chair of the Technical Committee, highlighted the importance of preserving these structures as part of Cyprus's shared cultural heritage. The Committee stated that restoring such sites fosters confidence, dialogue, and a sense of collective ownership of the island's diverse history. The project was officially announced as completed on June 27, 2026.
