Massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv

Between the night of July 1 and July 2, 2026, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine, specifically targeting the capital, Kyiv. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 74 missiles and nearly 500 drones were used in the assault. Ukrainian officials reported a death toll ranging from 13 to 21 people, with over 80 individuals injured, while emergency services continue rescue operations. Numerous residential buildings, including a multi-storey structure, were partially destroyed, leading Mayor Vitali Klitschko to declare July 3 a day of mourning. Russia's Ministry of Defence stated the strikes hit military and energy infrastructure in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas announced plans to propose new sanctions against entities supporting the Russian military industry. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently requested increased air defense support from international allies to protect against further strikes.
