Israeli cabinet officially recognizes the Armenian Genocide

On Sunday, the Israeli cabinet unanimously approved a proposal by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire. This decision marks a significant shift in Israeli policy, as the issue had previously remained outside official government recognition due to strategic relations with Turkey. The cabinet statement emphasized that the recognition is based on moral and historical obligations, condemning any denial or distortion of these events. With this act, Israel becomes the 35th country to officially recognize the genocide. Gideon Sa'ar stated during the meeting that it is never too late to do the right thing. Ankara continues to reject the classification of the 1915 events as genocide and opposes international recognition. This diplomatic move is expected to further strain already tense relations between Israel and Turkey, which are currently impacted by wider regional conflicts. Previously, the issue had only been supported by a Knesset committee resolution and personal statements from Benjamin Netanyahu.
