Diplomatic efforts regarding the UN-led Cyprus negotiations

United Nations Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin is currently conducting consultations to bridge gaps between the involved parties regarding the Cyprus issue. The initiative focuses on establishing a 'Strategic Agreement' that would outline a roadmap for negotiations and implement step-by-step measures. While the UN, EU, and US continue to support a bizonal, bicommunal federation, Ankara’s demand for a two-state solution remains unrecognized internationally. Reports suggest the proposed framework leans toward a decentralized or loose federation, with some critics arguing it closely resembles a confederation. Key priorities for the envoy include ensuring transparency, maintaining daily stability, and emphasizing European citizenship for all residents. The process seeks to move beyond traditional federation models from the 1990s to address contemporary geopolitical realities in the Eastern Mediterranean. Negotiations remain focused on finding a compromise between the Greek Cypriot rejection of sovereign equality and Turkey's push for a separate state entity.
