Heatwave leads to excess deaths and record temperatures across Europe
Since June 21, Europe has experienced an intense heatwave that has resulted in over 1,300 excess deaths across the continent. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that 150 million people are currently affected by extreme heat, which is causing school closures and infrastructure strain. In France, the national health agency reported approximately 1,000 excess deaths, with a high concentration among individuals aged 65 and older. Temperature records were broken in Germany, where 41.7C was recorded in Brandenburg, and in the Czech Republic, where 41.1C was measured in Doksany. The WHO noted that Europe is warming at twice the global average and urged countries to implement heat health action plans. Recommended preventative measures include avoiding outdoor activity during peak hours, utilizing shade, and keeping homes ventilated at night while blocking sunlight during the day. While extreme heat has begun to diminish in France, health officials warn that the mortality impact may persist for up to 10 days.
