Journalist and activist Sevgul Uludag dies at age 67-68
Turkish Cypriot journalist, activist, and author Sevgul Uludag passed away this past Sunday. Born in Nicosia in 1958, she began her journalistic career in 1980 and gained international recognition for her investigations into the fate of missing persons during the Cyprus conflict. Uludag was the first Cypriot to receive the International Courage in Journalism Award in 2008, and she also earned the European Citizen's Prize in 2014, with a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2019. Her work frequently highlighted the humanitarian trauma on both sides of the island and contributed to the identification of mass graves. Reports regarding her age at the time of death vary between 67 and 68 years old. President Nikos Christodoulides and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci both expressed their condolences, acknowledging her significant efforts toward peace and reconciliation. She wrote extensively for the newspapers Yeniduzen and Politis, focusing on historical memory and intercommunal dialogue.
