Journalist and activist Sevgul Uludag passes away at 68
Turkish Cypriot journalist, writer, and activist Sevgul Uludag has died at the age of 68. Born in Nicosia on October 15, 1958, she began her professional career in 1980. Uludag was widely recognized for her investigative work regarding the missing persons of the Cyprus conflict, a topic she focused on extensively from 2002 onwards. She frequently contributed to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Yeniduzen and the Greek Cypriot newspaper Politis, advocating for reconciliation between the two communities. Her investigative reporting played a significant role in identifying mass graves and facilitating the return of remains to families through the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). Beyond her journalism, she authored several books, including 'The Oysters That Lost Their Pearl' and 'The Orphans of Nationalism'. Throughout her career, she addressed sensitive issues regarding intercommunal violence, which reportedly led to threats against her. She remains noted for her efforts to break long-standing public taboos regarding the island's divided history.
