New officiating regulations adopted for KOP competitions

The Cyprus Football Association (KOP) will implement new international refereeing regulations starting from the 2026-27 season. These rules, established by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), aim to increase active playing time, reduce deliberate delays, and improve conduct toward officials. Key changes include a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks; failure to comply will result in possession being awarded to the opposing team or a corner kick, respectively. Additionally, substituted players are now required to leave the pitch within 10 seconds. These protocols are already being tested at the World Cup and will be adopted by UEFA competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, beginning July 1st. The implementation in Cyprus is intended to standardize officiating quality across professional matches.
