Customs seizures and fines for cigarette smuggling at Agios Dometios

On June 27, 2026, customs officers at the Agios Dometios crossing point detained two British passport holders, a mother and daughter, attempting to transport 16 cartons of tax-free cigarettes. The cigarettes lacked required safety and traceability markings, as well as health warnings in Greek and Turkish. The two women were released after agreeing to an out-of-court settlement of 960 euros, and their goods were seized. A separate incident occurred on June 29, 2026, at the same location involving a British-Turkish Cypriot citizen. Customs officials discovered 10 cartons of cigarettes and 850 grams of tobacco in his vehicle, all of which lacked required markings. The individual was arrested, and both the tobacco products and the vehicle were confiscated by authorities. He was later released following an out-of-court settlement agreement.
