Balconies collapse at apartment complex in Limassol
On the night of Monday, June 29, balconies on the third and fourth floors of a seven-story residential building in the Kapsalos area of Limassol collapsed. The debris fell onto a parked vehicle, causing property damage, but no injuries were reported. The building, located on Ilisou Street, had been categorized by the Limassol Municipality as requiring maintenance, though it was not officially listed as dangerous. Yiannis Tsouloftas, President of the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA), confirmed that engineers and the Fire Service secured the site immediately. Approximately 20 residents required temporary emergency accommodation provided by the Civil Defence. Authorities are currently evaluating the structural integrity of the complex to determine if further evacuations are necessary. Andreas Theodotou, General Secretary of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), highlighted the incident as a reminder of the urgent need for a mandatory periodic building inspection system, or 'MOT', for older structures built before 1994.
