Parliament to review proposals on Anti-Corruption Authority powers

The Cypriot Parliament is set to discuss three legislative proposals concerning the Anti-Corruption Authority tomorrow. These measures aim to empower the Authority to appoint independent criminal investigators, a function currently restricted to the Cabinet and the Attorney General. Two of the proposals were submitted by ALMA party members Odysseas Michaelides, Irene Charalambidou, Litsa Drousiotou, and Michalis Paraskevas. These specific bills seek to amend both the law establishing the Anti-Corruption Authority and the Criminal Procedure Law of 2026. A third proposal was introduced by DISY members George Pamboridis and Dimitris Demetriou, focusing on strengthening the institutional and operational framework of the Authority. The legislative committee will evaluate these proposals to determine their feasibility and potential constitutional challenges. These initiatives follow the publication of the 'Mafia State' report. The committee aims to clarify the proposed legal changes and resolve any conflicts with existing statutes.
