Attempted murder and suicide of a police officer in Limassol
On the morning of Tuesday, June 30, a 55-year-old police officer shot his 46-year-old wife near the Agios Spyridonas Lyceum in Zakaki, Limassol, before taking his own life. The victim is currently in critical condition and has been transferred to the Nicosia General Hospital to undergo further surgery. Investigators from the Limassol CID are analyzing CCTV footage, telecommunications data, and testimony to determine the motive, which is suspected to be linked to financial difficulties and gambling problems. Reports suggest the couple experienced frequent domestic conflicts prior to the incident. In response to the tragedy, there is a public debate regarding the necessity of regular psychological evaluations for police officers. Currently, psychometric tests are only conducted during the recruitment process, while service weapon certifications focus solely on technical skills every five years. Officials from the police union and the Cyprus Psychologists Association have suggested implementing more frequent and comprehensive psychological assessments for officers.
