NATO summit in Ankara and discussions on the Cyprus issue
A NATO summit is scheduled for July 7-8 in Ankara, where security measures have intensified, including the deployment of 70,000 personnel and a total ban on public demonstrations from June 28 to July 10. Authorities have also reported the arrest of 209 individuals in operations preceding the summit. The event is expected to serve as a venue for discussions between European officials, including Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan regarding the Cyprus issue and EU-Turkey relations. UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin has suggested a potential security role for NATO in a future resolution to the Cyprus conflict, although this proposal remains contested. Due to scheduling adjustments, Holguin has postponed her planned visit to Brussels to July 13. Reports indicate that the potential transfer of security guarantees to NATO is being discussed in the context of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's ongoing diplomatic efforts. Turkey, however, has not shown consensus regarding Cyprus's integration into NATO structures.
