Statistics on gender-based violence and femicide in Cyprus (2020-2025)
According to police data provided to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), 17 femicides were recorded in Cyprus between 2020 and 2025. Data indicates five cases occurred in 2020, five in 2021, two in 2022, one in 2023, one in 2024, and three in 2025, though some reports cite slightly varying figures. Geographically, these incidents were distributed across Nicosia (6), Limassol (6), Paphos (4), and Larnaca (1). In 2025, 300 women and 347 children were hosted in shelters for victims of violence. Additionally, police reports indicate 2,783 incidents of violence against women between 2023 and 2025, alongside 6,206 domestic violence offenses. A recent incident on June 30 in Limassol involved an off-duty police officer shooting his wife before taking his own life. The Equality Commissioner, Josy Christodoulou, and organizations like POGO have condemned these acts as systemic issues of gender-based power imbalances rather than isolated incidents. Authorities are currently promoting the European support hotline 116016 for victims of violence.
