Cyprus transitions to DVB-T2 digital television broadcasting
On July 1, 2026, Cyprus will officially switch to the DVB-T2 digital broadcasting standard, marking a major technological upgrade. This transition replaces the previous DVB-T system operated by the company Velister, which had faced numerous technical challenges since the original digital switchover on July 1, 2011. The new infrastructure will now be managed by the company Hellas Sat. According to Hellas Sat CEO Christodoulos Protopapas, this change brings Cyprus in line with other European nations that adopted the DVB-T2 standard earlier. The new system utilizes frequencies 35 and 48 to support higher data transmission, enabling High Definition (HD) and 4K resolution broadcasts. Viewers relying on antenna signals are required to perform a channel re-scan to continue receiving services. Individuals with older television sets may need to purchase an external DVB-T2 decoder or a new, compatible television set to maintain access to content.
