European Commission initiates 3.9 billion euro payment for Ukrainian drone procurement

The European Commission has announced the disbursement of 3.9 billion euros to Ukraine as the first phase of a new financial support package. This funding is part of a broader 90 billion euro loan program for the 2026-2027 period, consisting of 30 billion for macroeconomic support and 60 billion for defense industry enhancement. The 3.9 billion euro installment specifically targets the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), with total funding for this initial tranche expected to reach approximately 6 billion euros. Additional payments will follow in the coming days to complete this installment based on Ukraine's payment requests. This program follows a previous 3.2 billion euro disbursement on June 25, 2026. The funding is contingent upon Ukraine implementing specific reforms, including improvements to the rule of law and anti-corruption measures. The total EU support to Ukraine since the beginning of the war has exceeded 211.3 billion euros. The loans are financed through EU capital market borrowing and are intended to be repaid via future war reparations.
